IWT training

International Welding Technologist

The IWT training is for professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of welding technology and take on more responsibility in production or construction companies.
This training is suitable for, among others:

  • Technicians with a background in metal, mechanics or mechanical engineering
  • Experienced welders who want to grow into a coordinating role
  • Workshop managers or team leaders
  • Staff involved in engineering, quality control or inspection of welds

Candidates with extensive practical experience in the welding or metal industry may also be eligible to take part.

All lessons are taught in Dutch. A good knowledge of Dutch is required to follow the lessons properly.

Theory + Practice

The training consists of 369 teaching hours, every Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm.
Starts on 10 September 2026 and runs until the end of June 2027
Except during school holidays.

Students are expected to do 165 hours of self-study.

These are organised by the Belgian Welding Association (BVL).

What does an International Welding Technologist do?

An International Welding Technologist (IWT) plays a central role in the whole welding process. From preparation to quality control: the IWT makes sure that all work is carried out correctly, safely and in accordance with the applicable standards.

In your professional activities as an IWT, your tasks include:

  • Technical preparation and coordination of welding work
  • Monitoring weld quality and production processes
  • Assessing and managing welding procedures (WPS) and qualifications (WPQR)
  • Applying international standards such as EN ISO 3834, EN 1090, 15085,
    PED regulations and EN ISO 14731
  • Acting as the contact person for production, customers and certification bodies

As an IWT, you are the technical link between design, production and quality control.

With an IWT qualification, you increase your professional opportunities in industry.
Companies that work to international standards need expert staff who can give technical guidance on welding processes.

Possible positions after obtaining the diploma include:

  • Welding coordinator in accordance with EN ISO 14731
  • QA/QC manager for welding processes
  • Workshop or production manager
  • Technical specialist in welding technology
  • Inspector or technical adviser

The training is also a strong basis for further specialisations within the international welding training structure.

Admission requirements

Mandatory admission requirement – ISCED level 3XX
The admission requirements are met if 1 and 2; or 1 and 3; or 1 and 4 are met.

Upper secondary education of any category and any subcategory

1. The education is followed at colleges, schools, vocational schools and technical institutes recognised by the competent ministry (for example Education, Labour, etc.) of the national government.

And

2. The education must be in the field of science, technology and mathematics (STM), provided it includes at least the following subjects: mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Or

3. STM education that does not include physics and chemistry (mathematics must be covered in the level 3 education programme, with direct access to programmes at ISCED level 6 or 7) can be accepted if candidates have at least two years of experience in metalworking or in welding in the five years before the application.

Or

4. Education other than STM Education can be accepted if applicants have at least 5 years of experience in metalworking or in welding in the last 8 years before the application. These applicants must be aware that mathematics is an important basic subject for understanding the IWT training programme.
Applicants must pass the IWS 0 exam to be admitted to the IWT training programme.
